Planned Giving

Most of us share our time, talents and monies with charitable organizations throughout our lives because we care, and we know it will make a difference in someone’s life.  In doing so, we experience the inner joy that comes from giving to a charity that puts into action our own values and priorities. However, charity is not limited to your lifetime.  Your generosity to United Way of Brevard’s annual campaign impacts lives today. As a Founding Member of our Legacy Society, you have the ability to impact lives forever.

United Way of Brevard’s Legacy Society

Donors who have chosen to make an investment in United Way of Brevard’s future through financial support of our efforts to build an endowment are honored and recognized as members of our Legacy Society. This can be accomplished by inclusion of United Way in a donor’s will or estate plan, or by endowing his or her current-level annual Leadership Gift or Tocqueville Society gift.  Some have simply increased their annual gift, designating the increase to our endowment fund.

By investing in United Way’s Endowment Fund, you can help tackle problems in perpetuity, leaving a legacy of caring and commitment for which you and your family can be proud.  The principal of your gift will be maintained while the income generated is used to increase our impact and change lives for the better today – and tomorrow.

Joining your United Way Legacy Society is easy!

Here are five of the most popular ways to help us build our endowment:

Name United Way as a beneficiary in your will – A bequest provision can be included in your will when you create it, or you can amend an existing will.

Make an outright gift of cash, appreciated stock or personal assets – This is an excellent technique for individuals who are looking to benefit from an immediate tax deduction.

Consider endowing your current- level Leadership gift or Tocqueville Society gift.  What does it take to do that?  Take your annual gift and multiply it times 25. For example:

Annual Gift:                 $  1,000                       $  10,000
Cost to Endow:            $25,000                       $250,000

Name United Way as a beneficiary of a retirement plan – perpetuating your gift through a retirement plan is simple, flexible and tax wise.  Contact the administrator of your retirement plan to designate your United Way as a beneficiary.

Name United Way as a beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy – Many contributors are attracted to life insurance because it enables them to make a larger gift than they would otherwise have been able to make.

United Way Life may be an option for you! This new program uses an affordable guaranteed life insurance policy. With a modest out of pocket cost, you can create a substantial gift that will make an impact in our community forever.  You make five annual payments to United Way to cover your annual premiums.  The policy is fully paid once these payments have been made.  Both the premiums and the death benefit are guaranteed to fulfill your gift intent.  You never pay more, and United Way never receives less.

Making a gift using a Charitable Gift Annuity – This type of planned giving tool can provide you with income for life.  If you are over 60 years of age, this might be the right vehicle to use as your gift option.  Ask your attorney, CPA or wealth management advisor for information on this type of plan and whether or not it is a good fit for you.

Whatever plan you choose, please let us know!  We want to thank you personally for your support and recognize you for this over and above generosity!

We’d like to thank these special individuals for their vision to creating a legacy of caring that will continue to grow.

Roger and Marilyn Dobson
Roger and Marilyn are truly part of the very fabric of Brevard County.  Their leadership and long-standing support of our United Way and many other local organizations has been changing lives for decades.  This wonderful couple decided that making a planned gift was a special way to care about people in our community today, tomorrow and always.  They recently let us know that United Way has been included in their will, and we gratefully acknowledge this truly special gift.

Howard and Christine Lance
Howard and Christine support numerous charities throughout our community each year, and their efforts are tangible.  Howard served as United Way Board Chair for two years (2006 & 2007) and Campaign Chair in 2005.  During the 2007 United Way Annual Campaign, the Lances became the first local members of United Way of America’s National Tocqueville Society, making both a gift to the annual campaign and a gift to our endowment.

Bob and Cindy Michaud
Bob and Cindy’s legacy of giving has grown over the years, as has their volunteer leadership.  As Tocqueville Chairs in 2006-2008, they helped us raise awareness of the need to create an endowment to expand the breadth and depth of resources beyond our annual campaign.  This special couple walked the talk, making personal contributions above and beyond their annual gift to United Way of Brevard’s endowment fund.
